Addressing Alcohol Misuse Among Service Members: The SBIRT Model

Date/Time: Jan. 26, 2012, at 1-2:30 p.m. (EST)

Purpose: The DCoE January webinar will focus on alcohol misuse among service members and examine a secondary prevention method in non-specialty settings to engage service members at an early stage of risk. Screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) is a system-level approach to identify and treat people with drinking problems. Research has demonstrated that SBIRT is effective in identifying individuals at risk of developing serious alcohol problems. The SBIRT model is consistent with the “VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline for Management of Substance Use Disorders” from 2009 and will aid health care providers in integrating a step-by-step process for clinical decision making.

Holidays Apart From Family: Coping with Increased Stress

Date/Time: November 17, 2011 at 1:00-2:30pm (EDT)

Purpose: Separation between family members during the holiday season often impact relationships. Military duty frequently requires prolonged absence of one or both parents. The timing of the separation can begin on special seasonal holidays, making the parting even more significant. Other aspects of separation can mean that traditional, memorable practices have to be adapted to meet special circumstances. Speakers will provide information about holiday stress for the family and the separated service member and share approaches to mitigate that stress.

Generational PTSD and Post-traumatic Growth

Date/Time: October 27, 2011 at 1:00-2:30pm (EDT)

Purpose: This webinar provides a historical overview of PTSD that has contributed to our present-day understanding of the diagnosis and the varied approaches to treat this disorder. We will also provide an update on the concept of intergenerational transmission of PTSD across families. Finally, we will explore the concept of post-traumatic growth and an outcome of PTSD. Resources to address PTSD within families will be provided. With each conflict of the 20th century, health care providers learn more about the effects of exposure to war trauma. Increasingly, new research and studies focus on what may cause the disorder and the external impact of this exposure on families and communities. This webinar will present historical perspective on how our understanding of the diagnosis of PTSD and its treatments have evolved, and how this progression has led to attempts to define a trans generational factor for the etiology of the disorder. Current limitations of research on intergenerational transmission, and the concept of post-traumatic growth as an outcome of the disorder will be defined. Resources for addressing the impact of PTSD within the family will be provided.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Natural Disasters

Date/Time: Aug. 25, 2011, 1 to 2:30 p.m. (EDT)

Purpose: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) not only affects service members who experience traumatic events while deployed, it can also affect civilian communities, particularly in the aftermath of natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina, the earthquakes in Haiti and Japan, and the tornadoes that tore through the southern United States.

The knowledge gained through extensive study of PTSD in military populations has provided great insight into the disorder in civilian communities. This webinar will discuss the effects natural disasters have on individuals who live in communities devastated by natural disasters, ways to promote resilience, and mechanisms for coping.

Understanding and Overcoming Compassion Fatigue

Date/Time: February 24, 2011 1-2:30 pm

Purpose: It’s common for those who care for service members and veterans to embed themselves so deeply into meeting the needs of their patients that they neglect to care for themselves. Better known as ‘compassion fatigue’, this physical, emotional and spiritual exhaustion can be very disruptive to the lives of those who experience it. The webinar will discuss experiences, lessons learned and best practices associated with compassion fatigue from the perspective of a psychiatrist, a chaplain and a social worker/nurse.

Family Support Strategies and Techniques

Date/Time: 18 November 2010; 1300-1430 (EDT)

Purpose: The men and women of the United States Armed Forces have numerous resources available to them while preparing for deployment, during deployment and upon returning home. Because of the unique nature of the family relationship, it is essential that resources are available to family members, too. For each of us—including service members and veterans—family can be the most intimate and supportive unit we have, whether in times of celebration or crisis. This webinar will explore the resources available to families pre, during and post deployment.

Understanding, Addressing and Combating Stigma Surrounding Seeking Help for Psychological Health Issues in Today’s Military

Date/Time: 28 October 2010; 1300-1430 (EDT)

Purpose: There has been a recent increase in efforts within the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs to combat the stigma of service members seeking psychological health care. While progress is being made to remove the stigma, admitting the need for assistance during a crisis is still perceived negatively. This webinar will highlight helpful resources and explore how various organizations and agencies are attempting to tackle stigma at the national, state and local levels.

All the Way Home: Preventing Suicide Among Service Members and Veterans

Date/Time: 23 September 2010; 1300-1430 (EDT)

Reintegration: Adjusting to Life at Home After Deployment

Date/Time: 22 July 2010; 1300-1430 (EDT)

Purpose: Successful reintegration is essential to the overall health and well-being of service members. Challenges faced during the reintegration process are unlike challenges faced while deployed. They include, but are not limited to, readjusting to family life, going back to work, and coping with combat related stress and injury. This webinar will feature personal accounts of deployment to Afghanistan and adjusting to life at home. Reintegration difficulties and coping mechanisms are among the issues to be discussed.

The National Intrepid Center of Excellence: An Overview

Date/Time: 17 June 2010; 1300-1430 (EDT)

DCoE’s May Monthly Webinar will explore strategies to confront issues with children facing these difficult situations. A successful tactic we will highlight is our work with the Sesame Workshop in producing “Talk Listen Connect Phase III: Helping Families with Young Children Cope with the Death of a Loved One.”

Sexual Assault and Sexual Trauma in the Military

Date/Time: 22 April 2010; 1300-1430 (EDT)
